County Closes West Meadow Beach to Bathing

Report finds excessive levels of bacteria in West Meadow Beach waters.

After "bacterial levels in excess of acceptable criteria" were found in the waters of West Meadow Beach, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services has closed the beach to bathing as of Friday afternoon at 3:24 p.m.

According to the department's online beach monitoring database, a bacteria called enterococci, which is an indicator of fecal bacteria, was found in higher-than-acceptable levels on Sept. 5 and Sept. 3 than on previous days.

West Meadow Beach lifeguards have been off duty during weekdays since Labor Day, but the beach was scheduled to be staffed with lifeguards for one final weekend between Sept. 7 and Sept. 8.
