Suffolk County Legislator Ed Romaine, Candidate For Brookhaven Supervisor

Suffolk County Legislator Ed Romaine threw his hat into the ring for Brookhaven Town Supervisor after Mark Lesko resigned earlier this year to take a job leading Accelerate Long Island.

Hometown: Center Moriches

Party: Republican. Romaine is also the Conservative and Independence candidate for Brookhaven Town Supervisor.

Bio:  For 10 years, Romaine served as a history teacher in the Hauppauge School District.  In 1980, he entered public service as the Town of Brookhaven’s Commissioner of Housing and Community Development and was later appointed Director of Economic Development. Romaine was first elected to the Suffolk County Legislature in 1985 and was elected Suffolk County Clerk in 1989. He served 16 years as County Clerk, taking an active role in increasing productivity and improving access to official records. Romaine was integral in pioneering government use of technology and was chosen “2001 New York State County Clerk of the Year.” In 2005, his office received InfoWorld’s award for one of the “Most Innovative IT Projects of 2005." Romaine's son Keith, 36, died while serving as a Brookhaven Town councilman.

Education: Romaine earned a B.A. in History from Adelphi University and a Masters in History from Long Island University.

Opponent: Democrat Brian Beedenbender

Candidate Statement: Romaine said his mission includes streamlining government, making it more responsive to the needs of residents, working with the private sector to promote job growth, and preserving the environment for the next generation. Romaine's “3-Point Plan for Sound Budgeting” promises to bring fiscal responsiblity to Brookhaven and his economic development initiatives aim to stimulate job private sector growth and promote economic development. As town supervisor, Romaine said he will institute new open government and transparency policies, and he will expand land preservation programs to protect vital open space and farmland. Romaine has lived in Brookhaven Town with his family for over 40 years.

District: Romaine, currently serving as Suffolk County Legislator of the 1st Legislative  District, representing eastern Brookhaven, Riverhead, Southold, and Shelter Island, is running for Brookhaven Town Supervisor.

 A special election will be held on Nov. 6, concurrent with state and federal elections.
