Businesses in Brookhaven Facing New Fire Inspector Fee

An unfunded state mandate cost the town about $200K, causing the town to impose a new fee on businesses.

Brookhaven business owners are facing a new $50 fee after a state mandate forced the town to hire part-time fire inspectors at a cost of about $200,000, according to a report in The Village Times.

According to the report, a new state law mandates annual inspections for properties that require yearly operating permits. Business owners must fill out a registration form for their commercial properties and pay the fee by Dec. 31.

Brookhaven supervisor Mark Lesko told The Village Times the town is exploring the possibility of adjusting the fee to accommodate small businesses, which would otherwise have to pay the same fee as large businesses.
