Bathing Advisory Issued for Local Beaches

County warns of unsafe swimming conditions at Stony Brook Beach and others nearby.

Stony Brook Beach, the Stony Brook Yacht Club Beach, West Meadow Creek, and the shorelines of Strong's Neck are among 21 Suffolk County beaches for which the Department of Health Services has issued an advisory against bathing.

The beaches in Strong's Neck affected include Bayberry Cove Beach, Bayview Beach, Grantland Beach, Little Bay Beach, and Indian Field Association Beach.

The advisory, issued Tuesday morning, is in effect for two tidal cycles, or approximately 24 hours. It is based on Monday's heavy rainfall, and affects beaches where stormwater runoff and limited tidal flushing are chronic problems.

"The advisory is based on the potential that bacterial numbers in excess of New York State standards, resulting from the heavy rain, will impact these areas," the county said in a statement.
