Ward Melville Student Killed in Fall From Bluffs

A Lake Grove teen died Sunday after falling from bluffs in Wading River, police said.

Matthew J. Grimaldi, a senior at Ward Melville High School according to his Facebook profile, was attending a party in the area when he and friends climbed onto the bluffs near Hulse Landing Beach, the AP reported, citing information from Riverhead Town Police said. 

Grimaldi, 18, lost his footing as he tried to climb down from the bluffs and he was impaled by the limb of a fallen tree shortly before 7 p.m., police said. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Three Village Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich released the following statement on the district's website Monday:

The Three Village Board of Education and administration are extremely saddened by the tragic loss of Ward Melville High School senior Matthew Grimaldi. Such a devastating and sudden loss like this can have a profound effect on the entire school community. Members of the district’s crisis management team will be available to students and staff beginning on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 to offer support and counseling on an as-needed basis.
