Ward Melville, Arrowhead Elementary Briefly on Lockdown Wednesday

A burglary in the vicinity of Old Town Road caused school lockdown.

UPDATE 6:45 p.m. – A police spokeswoman said an arrest has been made in connection to this incident. Police had advised the school district to go on lockdown while they sought a burglary suspect in the vicinity of Old Town Road.

Administrators put Ward Melville High School and Arrowhead Elementary School on lockdown between 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon on the advice of Sixth Precinct police.

According to an email sent from the high school, the reason for the lockdown was police activity on Old Town Rd. However, as of 1 p.m., police spokeswoman could neither confirm nor deny that an incident had taken place in the vicinity of Old Town Rd.

During the lockdown, no one was permitted to enter or leave the building. According to an email from Dr. Alan Baum, high school principal, normal classroom activity continued during the lockdown.

"The safety of all our students and staff was of paramount importance," Baum wrote in an email informing the community that the lockdown had been lifted.

This is a developing story that Patch will update when more information becomes available.
