University Cops: Commuter Student Mugged on Campus

Robbery at Stony Brook University happens as region recovers from Hurricane Sandy.

A commuter student was mugged on a campus parking lot on Tuesday, Stony Brook University police said in an alert to students and faculty members.

"As part of our continuing effort to keep the campus community informed about matters of safety, we are notifying you that the University Police Department is currently investigating a report of a robbery in the vicinity of the Schomburg parking area," the police said.

Police said the victim was approached by a man dressed in a black, hooded sweatshirt, wearing a black hat and a black scarf covering his face. The man brandished an "unknown object," police said, and victim dropped her bag.

The man then fled the scene.

Campus police are investigating the incident and asked that anyone who has info on the incident to call 631-632-3333.

Classes were closed Tuesday due to damages the region sustained from Hurricane Sandy.
