Suspect In Custody, Charged In Four-Day Crime Spree

44-year-old is accused of robbing banks in Port Jefferson and Stony Brook, among other crimes.

Suffolk Police have arrested a man they claim stole three vehicles and robbed two banks in a five-day crime spree that stretched from Port Jefferson to Northport.

Police said 44-year-old Barry Napolitano, of Northport, began his stretch of crimes when he stole a 2013 Jeep from a garage at Huntington Jeep in Commack on Sept. 12. Later that day, they said he robbed the Chase Bank on Main Street in Port Jefferson.

Four days later, on Sept. 16, police said Napolitano struck again, stealing a 2006 Chevy Equinox from the garage of a home in Northport. Five hours later, at around midnight, he stole a 2005 American IronHorse motorcycle from a home in East Northport, authorities said.

The U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Force along with the New York State Violent Felony Warrant Squad busted Napolitano on Friday in Buffalo. He was turned over to Suffolk County Police detectives Saturday morning at the police barracks in Newburgh.

Napolitano is charged with two counts of third-degree robbery for the bank holdups, second and third-degree burglary and third-degree grand larceny in connection with the vehicle thefts, all felonies.

He’s due to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Monday.

On September 17, Patch reported that detectives were investigating a possible pattern between the two bank robberies in Port Jefferson and Stony Brook. In both cases, the suspect drew similar descriptions.

Detectives have not yet concluded their investigation.
