Updated: Smith Haven Mall Has Reopened

As of 12:45, the mall has been approved to open. Several stores still remain closed.

Update: As of 12:45 p.m. Smith Haven Mall has been approved to open. The following stores will remain closed: Oakley, New York and Company, Littman Jewelers, GNC, Brighton Collectibles and Wet Seal. Additionally, the mall entrance by Sears will be closed until further notice.

Update: As of 11:30 a.m., three stores in the mall have reopened; Macy's, Macy's Furniture and Sears.

The Smith Haven Mall remains closed to shoppers on Tuesday as building inspections are being completed by the fire marshal, according to a spokesperson from Simon Properties.

“There is no time frame right now for reopening,” said the spokesperson. “The stores are going through rounds of inspections.”

Women’s clothing retailer New York and Company, where the leaks were first reported, sustained the worst of the damage according to a mall representative.

The mall was evacuated on Monday after roof leaks in several stores became a cause of concern likely due to wet snow on the mall roof. Fire officials began by closing the Lifestyle wing of the mall at 2 p.m., where New York and Company is located, as a precaution. By 4 p.m. Monday, officials decided to evacuate and close the entire mall. Approximately 25 stores have been damaged by water.

The mall will be posting updates on their Facebook page throughout the day on opening times.

Heard many of the stores wouldn't let their employees go home early on Friday and many of them were the folks that got stuck on 347 trying to get home during the blizzard....karma!

Lisa, Denise, thank you. I was expecting people to write that I was nuts for relating the two. I urge you both to call your local state senator and ask him to sponsor/vote for S1262A, which would give local gov't the right to ban the retail sale of puppies of kittens. I write a Patch blog on this topic for Huntington/Northport: http://northport.patch.com/blog_posts/the-midwest-to-li-puppy-trail

Never shop- adopt! I support rescue/adoption and I have 5 rescues at home myself. Open your heart and your home and adopt a homeless pet. Visit your local shelter or contact a rescue group. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS NEW PUPPY MILL STORE AT SMITH HAVEN MALL!!!!

To all of the posters, I found out that the puppy store that was set to open will not be opening after all!! All puppies and boxes of supplies have been removed and the store is vacant!!! Good decision by Smith Haven Mall and kudos to those who protested! We were once again a voice for the voiceless....
