Setauket Woman Chasing Escaped Dog Struck by Car

Peggy Place of Setauket is in critical condition in Stony Brook Hospital.

A Setauket woman was hit by a car and critically injured early this morning as she attempted to catch her dog after it escaped from the yard.

According to Suffolk County police, Peggy Place, 56, was hit by a Ford Explorer that was traveling west on Main Street in Setauket at about 6:30 a.m. The driver of the Explorer, Richard Sayler, 51 of Sound Beach, was not injured in the crash. Place is a teacher at Nassakeag Elementary School in the Three Village school district.

Van Brunt Manor Rd. to Washington St. in Setauket was closed for several hours Monday morning due to the crash.

Place was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center and is listed in critical condition. Place’s dog, a boxer, was transported to an animal hospital.
