A proposed $14.9 million bond to renovate and expand the Setauket firehouse goes before voters on Tuesday.
Built in 1935, the Setauket firehouse at 190 Main Street has served the community for the past 79 years. However, fire officials say that since its formation, fire services have undergone drastic changes and the current building is no longer equipped to properly handle the growing demands of the community.
The present structure also compromises the safety of volunteers due to the tight space constraints and other building deficiencies, officials have said.
If the bond is approved, the average homeowner in the Setauket Fire District would pay an additional $93.84 a year in taxes, or $7.82 a month.
Previous proposals to expand the firehouse were voted down by the public in 2008 and 2005.
The Setauket Fire District covers about 28 square miles and serves Setauket, East Setauket, Old Field, sections of Stony Brook University and its hospital, and parts of Stony Brook, Lake Grove, Centereach, Port Jefferson, and Port Jefferson Station.
Polls are open Tuesday at the Setauket firehouse from noon- 9 p.m.
