Updates, Wednesday, 10:15 a.m.: A Suffolk Police spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday morning that the traffic light where Tuesday morning's fatal accident occurred was not operable at the time of the crash.
According to police, the officer involved in the crash was coming from a storm-related call at the time of the accident, and the investigation is ongoing to determine whether or not weather was a factor in the crash.
The driver of the vehicle has not been arrested or charged with any traffic violations.
Original story: A Stony Brook University student from New Jersey was killed early Tuesday morning after the car she was driving in collided with a Suffolk County Police officer at the intersection of Routes 347 and 112 in Port Jefferson Station.
According to Suffolk County Police, the marked cop car was heading west on Route 347 and the 2002 Toyota Highlander – carrying four individuals – was driving north on Route 112 at the time of the accident, which occurred at 1:30 a.m.
Police could not confirm if the stoplight at the intersection was operational at the time of the crash.
According to police, 21-year-old Vishwaja Muppa, of Edison, N.J. was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician with the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office. According to The Statesman, Muppa was a student at Stony Brook University.
Three others in the car were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment. Suffolk County Police Officer Rene Garcia was transported there as well and was later released.
Police said that the accident remains under investigation. They are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Seventh Squad at (631) 852-8752.
