Police Question Youths in Alleged Break-in at Sycamore Circle Park

Local civic group says mischief in the park is a problem.

An anonymous caller reported four youths attempting to break into the shed at Sycamore Circle Park on Aug. 1 at approximately 10 p.m., according to police reports.

However, a police spokesman said, officers arrived to instead find the youths sitting in the park's gazebo.

No arrests were made, and police said no one witnessed the alleged break-in, but a report was filed with the Suffolk County Police Department.

Following the incident, however, one of the leaders of the neighborhood's civic group, S-Section Circle of Friends, said chalk and other supplies intended for the park's "Mommy and Me" program were missing. In recent memory, numerous other incidents have occurred resulting in damage to the gazebo, benches, and playground equipment, particularly during the warm summer months, according to Circle of Friends secretary Anna Flack.

"It’s of major concern to many residents – especially those who live near the park – and has been the focus of many S-Section general meetings," Flack told Patch in an email. "...It’s very disheartening since it, most likely, is caused by other residents who clearly have no respect for others who use the park—especially the little ones."

Flack said the Circle of Friends brought in COPE officers as well as Suffolk County Legis. Vivian Viloria-Fisher to discuss ways of deterring incidents at the park. Representatives of the Sixth Precinct discussed ways of preventing incidents like these, encouraging residents to call 911 as soon as they see something suspicious. A Neighborhood Watch program in particular has been "difficult to get off the ground," Flack said.

"Nothing seems to deter the vandals," she said. "It’s  obviously necessary for us to seek police assistance once again."
