Police: Man Arrested After Crime Spree in Stony Brook, Port Jefferson

Jeffrey Kohberger, 31, faces multiple charges, police say.

A Stony Brook man was arrested Thursday after police say he went on a crime spree that included burglarizing his neighbor's house, stealing a woman's car and robbing a gas station. 

According to police, a 22-year-old woman was walking to her vehicle that was parked near the Vitamin Shoppe, located at 1320 Stony Brook Road in Stony Brook, around 7:15 p.m. when Jeffrey Kohberger approached and grabbed her.  

Kohberger, 31, attempted to take the woman's pocketbook and car keys but the woman fought off Kohberger, who fled on foot, police aid.

About four minutes later, the Kohberger approached a 38-year-old woman as she was getting in her vehicle parked near Party City, located at 205 Hallock Road in Stony Brook, police said.  

The woman was knocked to the ground and Kohberger stole her keys and fled in her 2002 Mazda Tribute, police said.

Approximately 15 minutes later, Kohberger arrived at the USA gas station located at 616 Main Street in Port Jefferson in the stolen vehicle, police said. 

Kohberger entered the station and when the clerk opened the cash register, he knocked the clerk to the ground and stole cash, police said. 

Kohberger then fled the scene in the stolen Mazda, police said. 

Following a search, Sixth Precinct officer Scott Dugan located Kohberger at Sunrise Laundromat, located at 102 Route 25A in Port Jefferson Station, around 8:35 p.m.  

Kohberger is charged with second degree robbery, second degree attempted robbery, third degree robbery, two counts of fourth degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and one count of fifth degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. He is also charged with second degree burglary for burglarizing his neighbor’s house earlier in the day Thursday, police said. 

Kohberger was being held at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Friday.
