Firefighters Respond to Blaze at Stony Brook University

Local fire departments stopped a roof fire at the Earth and Space Sciences building.

A fire on the roof of a building at Stony Brook University spread to the building's third floor before firefighters stopped the blaze late Monday night.

The Earth and Space Sciences building was unoccupied at the time of the fire, according to Lawrence Zacarese, assistant chief of police and director of emergency management at Stony Brook.

On Tuesday morning, Zacarese said the building was open for classes in the unaffected parts of the building, but the cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.

University fire marshals and police were the first to respond to an automatic alarm at the building shortly after 11 p.m. on Monday. The Stony Brook Fire Department, Setauket Fire Department, Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and Resident Safety Patrol soon arrived on the scene.

The building is one of several facilities on campus currently undergoing renovation. According to an Oct. 7 facilities newsletter, the Earth and Space Sciences building is having all new roof exhaust fans installed, new roofing, window replacements, and other exterior repairs. Construction began this past summer.
