Fire District Commissions Further Study of Main Street Firehouse

Commissioner calls an architectural and engineering assessment a "cornerstone" of the project.

Plans to renovate the Setauket Fire Department's Main St. firehouse are moving slowly but still plodding along nonetheless, according to fire district commissioners.

The commissioners gathered at the Hulse Road Headquarters in East Setauket on Thursday to review the progress of the renovations of the 76-year old Station 1. Architect Frank G. Relf has met with commissioner Greg Perricone to plan an architectural and engineering assessment of the firehouse.

“This is the cornerstone to a moving forward,” Perricone said. “Without this assessment, we’d still be stagnating and waiting and waiting.”

Although no members of the public were in attendance, Perricone said locals are frustrated with the slow progress.

“This will do a fundamental examination of the building to tell us what condition it is in,” Perricone continued.

According to the “change of services” report from Relf, the original proposal called for the renovation of the existing lounge and company room at the firehouse. As of now, a field survey and design drawings of the floor plan and ceiling plan have been completed.

The assessment will “investigate and identify deficiencies and defects regarding exterior façade, interior surfaces, structural components, mechanical-electrical system as well as consider cosmetic and aesthetic elements of the facility.”

The $12,000 study was passed by a 3-2 vote.

“Today was a very important step forward and I was very pleased that we were able to go to this step,” Perricone said.

Progress has been made: a new generator was recently mounted in the firehouse, but it has yet to be connected. The emergency transfer switch will also be moved to a location near the generator.

Relf is a general architect for the district. He has been in charge of getting certificate of occupancies for the different district buildings and is the architect of record involved in placing the various electrical equipment near the new generator at Station 1.

The fire district’s original contract with Relf to renovate the firehouse was $41,000. An amount of $6,600 has already been paid. The $12,000 study will be billed against the remaining balance of $34,400.
