Fire District Budget Hearings Set for Tuesday

Both the Stony Brook and the Setauket Fire Districts will present their budgets to the public on Tuesday.

Residents of Three Village will have the opportunity to comment on their fire districts' proposed 2012 budgets at a pair of public hearings set for Tuesday evening.

For the Setauket Fire District, the budget hearing will take place at 6 p.m. at its Hulse Road headquarters. For the Stony Brook Fire District, the budget hearing will take place at 8 p.m. at its Main Street facility. Fire districts are required by state law to publicly present their budgets before they are approved.

The Setauket Fire District, which has cut taxes more than 30 percent over the past two years, has proposed a $5 million budget that represents a 9.79 percent increase over last year's budget.

"If they want, [residents] can come see exactly what their money was spent on," Setauket Fire District chairman Rich Leute said on Monday.

Advance details of the Stony Brook Fire District's proposed budget were not immediately available.

Residents can also review copies of the districts' proposed budgets filed with the Brookhaven town clerk's office during its normal business hours.
