Sunday Night Car Accident Takes Down Utility Pole

Pole snapped and fell on Monday afternoon.

A fallen utility pole on Route 347 in Stony Brook, the result of a Sunday night car accicdent, caused havoc on Monday afternoon.

According to Suffolk police, the downed pole was accompanied by fallen wires, which brought traffic to a near halt until LIPA responded and fixed the problem.

A LIPA spokesman said the damage to the pole was the result of an accident late Sunday night, which police said involved an overturned car that struck the pole shortly before 11 p.m.

"A crew was called to the scene to make sure the pole was still standing and no wires were down," spokesman Mark Gross said. "The pole was scheduled to be replaced [Tuesday], but it came down yesterday at about 4:50 p.m. A new pole has been set."

According to suburbanfiremarshal.org, the driver of the car was able to pull himself out of the vehicle and was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with minor injuries.
