So long, Dr. Kaplan
Below please find the obituary for my father, local physician Dr. Robert Kaplan. As chairman of the medical society of the county, my father held most of his meetings at the Three Village Inn. We had his retirement dinner there! He would be honored to know he was remembered in the Three Village Herald.

Dr. Robert Kaplan, OBGYN from Smithtown, beloved by many, died on January 17, 2014. He was 80 years old.
Dr. Kaplan delighted in his patients and had an old fashioned way of connecting with people. “My father was a gentle soul. His nickname was Cream Puff Bob,” said his youngest daughter Amy Pincus.

In his off hours, Dr. Kaplan was a hobbyist, builder and engineer. He built appliances, recreational vehicles, radios, even a Bradley GT sports car. He earned his private pilot’s license and loved soaring over the east end of Long Island.
Dr. Kaplan was a lousy golfer, but he had endless enthusiasm for the sport. He could hit a tree at 300 yards! He played tennis most of his life, and was also an avid boater and an excellent musician. He studied clarinet with Lawrence Sobol for many years after retiring from medicine. To his last days, just holding his clarinet brought him joy.
