Question: Demolition of Plaza Theatre

Your thoughts on the landmark.

Construction crews began taking down the Plaza Theatre on Tuesday, which was once a one-screen movie theatre.

Those of us who were around when it was opened can recall the scorn it received from the Catholic Church because of the type of movies it chose to show at the time. Not X rated by any means, but racy for the late 50's and early 60's. It wasn't a theater I went to often, maybe because it was on the other side of town. I do remember seeing one or two movies there but don't remember the titles. The most recall I have was how long it was closed! I'm glad that it finally has fallen and hope that the chosen new use for the land is a smart one. Maybe anything constructed will be set back like the old Hills building is so that at least the street will appear more open and spacious.

The best memory i have at that theater was when it played the movie "A Star Is Born" with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. It was the first Streisand movie that i ever saw at the age of 13. It made me an instant fan of Barbra.... I will never forget that night when my parents took me to see that movie. it was magical Geo Greco

So happy to see it go. It was such an eyesore. The memories I will have of what goes up there will be better than my current memories of being an empty building most of my life.

It needed to go, no question, but now more apartments in it's place? It's outside the Village, not right on top of the others that went up recently and are going up, but still, that end of Town needed more of a destination type development. Plenty of space for it someplace else, but all across Long Island developers seem to be mailing it in with nothing but apartments and condos. I'm sure it will look nice but how about some creativity?
