Village People: Top 300 Professor, New VP of Research at Stony Brook

Local residents making headlines.

Catherine Marrone of Stony Brook, who is an assistant professor of sociology at Stony Brook University, has been named one of the nation's top 300 college and university professors, the University announced last week. "Her dedication to our students and her drive to connect with them are just two of the many qualities that make her an outstanding educator and a true asset to this institution," SBU President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. said in a statement. The ratings, published by The Princeton Review, were drawn from a partnership with the website RateMyProfessors.com.

Dr. Benjamin Hsiao of East Setauket has been named Vice President for Research at Stony Brook University effective May 1. Hsiao, who has mentored multiple Siemens and Intel semifinalists and finalists, will be responsible for the "campus-wide advancement of Stony Brook's research mission through strategic planning," the university said in a statement. He will oversee the Research Foundation and serve as an advocate for Stony Brook's research on the state, national and international levels. Hsiao first joined Stony Brook in 1997 as an assistant professor of chemistry and in 2007 became chairman of the Department of Chemistry.

Dr. Margaret McGovern of Huntington has been elected Chair of the Governing Board of the Clinical Practice Management Plan at Stony Brook Medicine. McGovern also chairs the Department of Pediatrics at the Stony Brook School of Medicine and serves as Physician-in-Chief of Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital." She is an excellent choice for this key leadership role as we build upon our strong foundation in clinical care, research and education,” said Dr. Ken Kaushansky, Senior Vice President of Health Sciences and Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine.

So, essentially that first residential home is being written off as the price of doing business.Read More There goes that property value. Other than as a professional residence, who would want to live by a driveway for that traffic? As for the entrance Village Automotive, that will bring even more traffic to an already busy intersection nearby. 25A is impassable/impossible in that area for large chunks of the day now.

The rezoning is for the acres of undeveloped residential land across from Ann Maries Farm stand,Read More extending down to the wooded area on 25A. A one way entrance would be placed by Village Automotive and a one way exit would come out on N. Country Rd. adjacent to the first residential house.

Can you tell us where this property is? An address or street name?

I the BOE and Union didn't allow the majority of the budget be spent on benefits and salaries maybeRead More there would be money left for supplies. With declining enrollment and cuts to programs for our kids they only ones making out are teachers and staff with too generous salaries and benefits. Vote no on Tuesday!

Seriously? We are asked to send in enough supplies per kid each year to supply 5 kids. Where does itRead More all go? It gets lost, thrown out, or ends up back in the students home via backpack. The problem is not the lack of supplies, but a lack of personal responsibility. But if we send in enough supplies each year for ten or fifteen students, then we might be able to avoid the underlying problem.

everyone should research what all the school administrators are raking in and the multple levels ofRead More staff that exists at TVCSD. It is beyond reasonable to have salaries at that level and multiple administrators and assistants and directors and assistant directors and chairman etc. Teachers earn their fair share!
