Health & Fitness

Hey There. Your Trainer is Calling Again!

How are you doing with your healthy New Year's Resolutions? Hmm...thought so! Don't worry, you're not alone. If you slide, here's some motivation to get back on track.

So, it's been over a month since the resolution began.  That's right, Jan. 1 seems like a memory now.  Let me remind you. Pick one - You pledged to start eating healthy, exercise 5 times a week, work out with a trainer, run a 5K, mountain climb, join a roller hockey league, etc. By a show of hands, how many of you are still sticking to those resolutions, the ones you made with such conviction?  Alright, that's OK, we're all guilty of slacking off here and there. The gym is emptier now and there are some great sales on fat free cottage cheese at the store.

Don't be too hard on yourself, since there are many obstacles to overcome.  Even the strongest cave on Super Bowl Sunday.  I barely got through that one with my head held high. Barraged by wings and ziti and chips 'n dip, I hid in a corner eating mounds of the Greek salad I brought, shielding my eyes from the revelers happily munching on baked brie on crackers. And then there's Valentine's Day. Yes, dark chocolate is the bane of my existence. Whether in a box or on a stick in assorted heart or doggy shapes, it's really hard to resist. Touted as being heart healthy, unless you sample an entire box of  truffles, biting into each one, searching for the cherry cream.

But I digress; the point is, there will alway be a party, wedding, holiday or vacation as an excuse to go completely hog wild. The key is moderation. Have a wing or two, not 20, eat a truffle, slowly, or drink one glass of wine or beer and call it a day. Make sure you've done some type of movement that day. You'll thank yourself in the morning. Temptation is a mighty strong spoiler of good intentions and so are the people around you who urge you to indulge when you really shouldn't.

Summon up all your strength (and never go to a party hungry) and look towards some future motivation. Picture Spring weather, when you'll have to shed those outer layers of clothing.  How great would it be to feel a little lighter, and healthier as you continue to exercise and make better food choices. And remember, when you attend Johnny's birthday celebration or Grandma's Sunday dinner, stay away from the melty cheese and reach for the green! Then take Buddy out for a walk!
