Fifth-grade Fundraiser Nets New Friends and a Big Donation

A new student gets support from her classmates on a fundraising project for cancer.

It’s not always easy being the new kid on the block, but a fifth-grade student at Nassakeag Elementary began a fundraising effort that helped her bridge the gap to new friendships and make a sizable donation to the American Cancer Society.

Eight-year-old Sabiha Singh moved to East Setauket from Pennsylvania in August. Her family shares a home with her aunt and disabled grandmother.

“Moving into a new neighborhood and new school certainly comes with difficulties,” said Sabiha’s mom Indu. “She took her mind off it with her creativity and started making Rainbow Loom bracelets to give to the kids at school and make new friends.”

Her aunt, Kiran Wadhwa, who attended Three Village schools shared her experiences of giving back to the community with Sabiha, who then decided she wanted to do the same.

“I came up with the idea of doing a breast cancer awareness fundraiser. My aunt saw my love for making Rainbow Loom bracelets and realized this was the perfect way to raise money for the cause," said Sabiha, a student in Mrs. Kimotek's class.

Sabiha’s classmates joined in the effort and on Thursday and Friday mornings the class sold the bracelets.

In all, $500 was raised in a relatively short period of time. The money was donated to the American Cancer Society and was doubled through a matching grant program through the WellPoint Foundation, bringing the grand total to $1,000.

“Starting this cause, Sahiba stepped up and really took a liking towards being part of something bigger, and explaining to her new classmates how important it is to give back to the community,” said her mom.

“She has put in long hours of effort towards this fundraiser and our whole family is so proud of how much she has accomplished in only a few days with such a simple, creative idea that flourished into a beautiful campaign. Sahiba is thankful she was able to get the other children involved as well to make it a group effort, and get the entire class excited about this project.”
