Batten down the hatches and get ready for the hilarious hijinks of David Ives' The Liar presented by the Department of Theatre Arts at Stony Brook University. Director Deborah Mayo a Yale Drama School graduate and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Theatre Arts at Stony Brook University has nothing but fun in mind.
Dorante, the play's central character, demonstrates just how far one audacious person can stretch the truth. He is charming, handsome, and a pathological liar! Everyone listening to his tales is smitten, but unfortunately, with every problem solved by his tall tales--more problems arise. Will he keep his stories straight? Will mistaken identities untangle? Will he get the girl?
Mayo hopes the audience, too, will be fooled by the liar's fabrications and captivated by the outrageous shenanigans that ensue. She describes this play as a "love song to theatre that plays playful homage to its traditions and its conceits". The Liar, based on a 17th century play by the same name by Pierre Corneille, is set in the 1600's but charged with contemporary fun and nuance.
