Science on Tap with Nancy Franklin

Science on Tap
food, beer & great conversation...

Science on Tap asks: What
do You Remember?
Hosted by Steven Reiner with guest, Nancy Franklin.  Doors open at 7:00pm, taping starts at 8:00pm.

“Ah, I remember it well…” But do you? In fact, at every
moment of your life you unintentionally – and unconsciously – pick and choose
what you notice.  Then as time goes by,
you fill in the holes with guesswork and subsequent, perhaps unrelated,
experiences.

This is why Dr. Nancy Franklin argues that we are both
better than video cameras and much, much less reliable as recorders of
information.  “People,” she says, “predictably
get it wrong.” Dr. Franklin is often called upon to bring her understanding of how we get things wrong into the
courtroom, where juries frequently make decisions of guilt or innocence based
on the testimony of an eyewitness.  She
will discuss with host Stephen Reiner her studies of eyewitness memory and
identification and how it might be improved.
She will also share her insights into what our inevitably flawed recall
of events means for how we interpret our own version of our lives.
