Extreme Origami: Origami Heaven 2013 Exhibition

Origami began as a refined and rarified art practiced by the upper classes in Japan – but EXTREME ORIGAMI presents a more modern and more adventurous ethos. Using materials including metal, fabric, synthetics (and yes, still paper), origami artists from around the world present works that are extremely large, extremely small, extremely intricate, and extremely innovative. Work with special relevance to research in medicine, mathematics, and engineering will be featured. With mixed-media and multimedia components, this exhibition displays both the aesthetic and technological possibilities of origami in the twenty-first century.

EXTREME ORIGAMI is part of our annual summer ORIGAMI HEAVEN program. The exhibition is complemented by the Origami Heaven 2013 festival, which takes place on Wednesday, July 31st, 2013. The festival features workshops, a puppet portal, storigami (storytelling through origami), and demonstrations of oversized folding. Daily workshops hosted by experience folders take place from 12pm to 1pm for the duration of the exhibition, and are free and open to the public.

Presented in conjunction with Long Island Folding Enthusiasts (L.I.F.E.), and with support from the Japan Center at Stony Brook and WSHU Public Radio
