Weekend Guide: Raisin' Cane, Discovering Origami, Celebrating Art

Patch picks for weekend activities.

With the brunt of the blizzard behind us, weekends are once again jam-packed with activities – both indoor and outdoor activities for a wide range of audiences. Take your pick!

Family

  • For Minnesauke Elementary families, Friday night is movie night. Hotel Transylvania will show at 7 p.m. ($2 admission).
  • It's also movie night at Emma S. Clark Memorial Library, which will show Peter Pan at 6 p.m. (free).
  • Saturday is Maple Sugaring Day at Benner's Farm ($7 admission). Click here for more details.
  • A special workshop on "Getting Ready to Babysit" is for teens in grades 7 through 12 at Emma S. Clark Memorial Library at 9:30 a.m.
  • Two sessions of "Discover Origami" begin at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. at the library for kids ages 8 through 12.

Fine Arts & Exhibits

  • "A Celebration of Color" is on display at Gallery North. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
  • On Sunday at 5 p.m., Gallery North will host an "ArTalk" in which four artists from the current show "A Celebration of Color" will be on hand to talk about "their inspirations, their personal techniques, their mediums, and their careers."

Live Music & Entertainment

  • On Friday night at the Staller Center, catch the Stony Brook Music Department's production of the opera Hansel and Gretel (tickets $5-$10) at 8 p.m.
  • On Saturday night at the Staller Center, the show Raisin' Cane will raise the roof starting at 8 p.m. (tickets $34).
  • On Sunday at 2 p.m., Le Petit Salon de Musique at UUFSB presents Fire & Folly, which will present a program of unusual classical musical combinations called "Mixed Marriages."

Outdoor Recreation

  • At West Meadow Beach, several free events will take place Saturday: a birding walk at 9 a.m. for adults; a family-friendly nature walk at 1 p.m.; and a family-friendly full moon hike at 5:30 p.m. Call 631-751-7863 to register.

So, essentially that first residential home is being written off as the price of doing business.Read More There goes that property value. Other than as a professional residence, who would want to live by a driveway for that traffic? As for the entrance Village Automotive, that will bring even more traffic to an already busy intersection nearby. 25A is impassable/impossible in that area for large chunks of the day now.

The rezoning is for the acres of undeveloped residential land across from Ann Maries Farm stand,Read More extending down to the wooded area on 25A. A one way entrance would be placed by Village Automotive and a one way exit would come out on N. Country Rd. adjacent to the first residential house.

I the BOE and Union didn't allow the majority of the budget be spent on benefits and salaries maybeRead More there would be money left for supplies. With declining enrollment and cuts to programs for our kids they only ones making out are teachers and staff with too generous salaries and benefits. Vote no on Tuesday!

Seriously? We are asked to send in enough supplies per kid each year to supply 5 kids. Where does itRead More all go? It gets lost, thrown out, or ends up back in the students home via backpack. The problem is not the lack of supplies, but a lack of personal responsibility. But if we send in enough supplies each year for ten or fifteen students, then we might be able to avoid the underlying problem.

everyone should research what all the school administrators are raking in and the multple levels ofRead More staff that exists at TVCSD. It is beyond reasonable to have salaries at that level and multiple administrators and assistants and directors and assistant directors and chairman etc. Teachers earn their fair share!

Last year we lost 20 staff...this year we are losing over 50 meanwhile the remaining staff isRead More getting a 6% raise...the UNION is eating itself and ruining our school and the BOE is not dealing with the situation..the benefits are up nearly 13% this year...what do you think will happen next year? Another 60,70,80 to be laid off? My vote is NO!!!!
