Week in Review: Pizza Man Mugged Tops Local Headlines

Suffolk County Police arrested three teens for allegedly mugging a Domino's pizza delivery driver at knifepoint on Sunday night and making off with his cash.

Members of the community will have the chance to publicly comment on the newest iteration of the Carmans River Protection Plan, after the Brookhaven Town Board passed a resolution that set two public meetings on the issue. The meetings will be held at Town Hall on May 30 at 6 p.m. and June 2 at 1 p.m. with the goal of soliciting community input – a key component that the original plan lacked, according to First District councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld.

A University of Delaware student from Newark, Del., has been formally charged with a hate crime following his , also a student at the university, at an off-campus party on April 15. According to a police report, Derek Didonato, 21, was arrested Wednesday and charged with offensive touching as a hate crime. He stands accused of pushing Zachary Baum, an 18-year-old gay student, to the ground after making a derrogatory comment about Baum's sexual orientation.

Suffolk County police are investigating a robbery that took place at the BP Gas Station on Route 25A in Setauket on Sunday at 10:08 p.m.

At Tuesday's Broohaven Town Board meeting, the public hearing period for new legislation that would ban the planting of bamboo and regulate existing bamboo by extended by 10 days. According to a report in the Times Beacon Record Newspapers, Councilwoman Kathy Walsh, R-Centereach, introduced the bill. If passed, bamboo planting by any resident or corporation in the Town of Brookhaven would be banned. Also, owners of pre-existing bamboo must "confine such species to prevent the encroachment, spread, invasion or intrusion" to any neighboring property.

The Brookhaven Town Board on Tuesday tabled a discussion of the it recently enacted for town beaches and marinas, voting unanimously to postpone the resolution until the next board meeting on May 8. Councilwoman Jane Bonner originally intended to present a resolution that would repeal the resident fee for beach and marina parking, originally established the first week in April.

The Three Village Board of Education on Tuesday voted unanimously to appoint Kevin Scanlon as the new assistant superintendent for educational services, the position that Cheryl Pedisich will vacate as she steps into on July 1.
