Brookhaven Tightens Code, Fines for Rental Abuses

Brookhaven Town officials this week tightened the definition of a single-family home and upped fines for rental abuses to crack down on illegal and overcrowded rentals in the community.

The move comes after weeks of outcry from Three Village locals, specifically in Stony Brook, who worry that illegal boarding houses most often overcrowded with Stony Brook University students are disruptive to neighborhoods and even drag down property values.

Stony Brook Communication Center Named After Alan Alda

Stony Brook University named its Center for Communicating Science after Alda Alda, who has championed a habit of study that affects all other concentrations offered at the university.

Opened in in 2009 under the purview of the School of Journalism, the Alda Center has since gone on to offer courses to nursing and medical students in an effort to promote a clear dialogue, most frequently between scientists and the general public.

Killer of Suzette Snider's Brother Sentenced to Life

A Dix Hills man who was convicted of murdering the brother of Suzette Snider – the spouse of rock star Dee Snider – will spend the rest of his life in jail.

Christian Tarantino, 46, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday for his role in the murders of three men between 1994 and 2003. 

Computers Seized from Councilman's Office

Three computers were seized by the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office from the office of Brookhaven Town Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld on Wednesday afternoon.

Newsday reported that the assets were seized from the councilman's office in Farmingville, though as of Thursday morning, Fiore-Rosenfeld still was unsure why.

Duo at Large Following Chopper, K-9 Search

Suffolk County Police called in a helicopter and K-9 late Tuesday night to search for a pair of individuals in Lake Grove suspected of trespassing onto the property of an abandoned house, though the suspects were able to avoid police.

Court Sentences Stony Brook Woman for Food Pantry Scheme

A Stony Brook woman who pleaded guilty recently to selling fake Tiffany jewelry in the name of charity was sentenced to five years probation this past week.

Maryann Bell, serving as the director of the Greater Port Jefferson Food Pantry, was arrested in late 2011 after police said she had sold the goods while telling customers the proceeds were going to benefit the pantry. 

Local Filmmaker Premieres New Film at Tribeca Film Festival

That’s what happened to local filmmaker Cody Blue Snider the night he wrapped up his new film, “Fool’s Day,” at a studio in New York City a couple of weeks ago. He had just finished the conversion of the final film into the digital format required for screenings and had the hard drive in his backpack.
