University Announces Plan to Build $194 Million Research Facility

State-aided initiative would allow for 1,500 additional students but require annual 8 percent cost hike over 5 years.

Stony Brook University announced its plan to build a 250,000-square-foot medical research facility as part of Governor Andrew Cuomo's SUNY2020 plan.

With a price tag of approximately $194 million, the eight-story building would headquarter the University's cancer research and care initiatives. An annual tuition hike of 8 percent, or $400 per student per year for five years, would complement a proposed $35 million economic development grant from the state to build the facility.

As a result, the university expects it could welcome 1,500 additional students, hire close to 250 faculty members as well as provide additional financial aid.
