Setauket Woman Named Director of Nonprofit Chapter

Deborah Carioto will lead the Long Island Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Setauket resident Deborah Carioto has been named executive director of the Long Island chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, based in Melville.

The foundation announced Carioto's appointment earlier this week. She replaces previous executive director Barbara Gill Rogus, who retired after 10 years with the foundation.

Carioto comes to the JDRF after 14 years with the American Lung Association, where she served in several executive and management positions. She will lead the JDRF in fundraising and organizational growth.

Carioto, who has a B.S. in business administration from Excelsior College and a M.S. in political science from Stony Brook University, was named one of 40 rising professionals under age 40 by the Long Island Business News in 2002. State Sen. Kemp Hannon appointed her to the state's Tobacco Advisory Board from 2002 to 2004, and she has taught as an adjunct professor of political science at St. Joseph's College since 2001.

“I am very excited to join the JDRF team and am so proud to be a part of an organization with such a vital mission,” Carioto said. “I look forward to working with the Long Island community in continuing to fund the critical research necessary to finding a cure.”
