News Nearby: 3 Rescued from LI Sound; Homeless Man Charged in Strangulation

3 Men Rescued from LI Sound in Rocky Point. Three men were pulled from the Long Island Sound near Rocky Point Wednesday evening after their canoe capsized, Suffolk County Police said. The victims, brothers Edwin Arevalo, 24, and Jose Arevalo, 28, along with their friend Moises Guevara, 35, all of Case Avenue in Patchogue, were transported to John T. Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson and treated for hypothermia. According to police, the three men were fishing in a two-person canoe just east of Hagerman Landing Road at around 7:30 p.m. when the vessel capsized. A nearby resident heard the men screaming for help and called police.

No Power Plant for Kings Park. The Long Island Power Authority announced Wednesday afternoon that it will recommend two locations to its board of trustees as possible future sites for a new power plant. The two sites being considered are in Yaphank and Shoreham, but the proposed site in Kings Park is no longer under consideration. LIPA Board Trustees will be asked to vote on moving forward with conducting negotiations for 20-year Purchase Power Agreements with both companies as it determines which one will offer the best value to Long Island customers.

Homeless Man Charged in Strangulation. A homeless man was arrested and charged with strangling another homeless man on Saturday outside of a fast food restaurant in Lake Ronkonkoma, Suffolk County Police said. According to police, Kevin Conway, 33, got into an altercation with Keith Leone in the parking lot of Checkers Restaurant at 258 Portion Road at around 1:30 a.m. Law enforcement authorities said Leone was left at the scene unconscious and was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition. Leone, 39, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on October 23.

LaValle Holds Significant Fundraising Lead over Fleming. In the final stretch of election season, the most recent campaign finance disclosure reports from the New York State Board of Elections show incumbent state Sen. Kenneth P. LaValle with a comfortable fundraising lead ahead of challenger Bridget Fleming. According to his 32-day pre-election disclosure, LaValle has brought in $186,449 during the 2012 election cycle, $67,381 more than his opponent. The Port Jefferson Republican, running for his 19th two-year term, began the cycle with $85,829 left over from previous elections. Meanwhile, Fleming, a Noyac Democrat and Southampton Town councilwoman, has raised $119,068 since March — and she also had the expense of mounting a Democratic primary campaign.
