Long Island Sound Graded C-Plus by Environmental Group

New York, Connecticut rated on their caretaking of the Sound.

The Connecticut Fund for the Environment last week gave New York and Connecticut an average score of C-plus for the states' caretaking of the Long Island Sound, according to a report in The Village Times Herald.

Among the criteria used for compiling the grade, the states scored a D+ in the area of progress in handling raw sewage; a C- for low oxygen levels in parts of the Sound; a C+ in preventing stormwater runoff; and an A- in promoting migratory habitats.

The rating was based on five years' worth of data and cited agencies including the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Environmental Protection Agency's Long Island Sound Study.
