Local Political Organizations Offer Rides to Voters on Election Day

If you can't leave your home to vote on Tuesday, here's how you can get help getting to the polls.

Two local political organizations are offering free rides for local voters on Tuesday for those who can't leave their house due to Hurricane Sandy's effects.

The Brookhaven Town Republican Committee and Three Village Democratic Club are hoping that free rides to polling sites will mitigate the impact the storm could have on the elections.

To take advantage of a ride from the Brookhaven GOP, call the group's headquarters at 631-451-2320.

"If you don't have gas or their driveway is blocked by a big branch, give us a call," said Mike Schaefer, a volunteer with the Three Village Democratic Club. "It's all about voting."

In addition, the Three Village Democratic Club is also looking for volunteers to help with the driving. Schaefer said drivers will work two-hour shifts so as not to use too much fuel.

The Board of Elections has said that except for a pair of polling sites in Suffolk County, the polling sites will all be up-and-running, even if it is on generator power.

Jesse Garcia, an official with the Suffolk County Board of Elections and chairman of the Brookhaven Republicans, said on Monday the BOE continues to do on-site assessments of polling places.
