J-School Project: Red Light Cameras on LI

Opinions on this new technology vary, with many thinking that money, not safety, is their main objective.

More than 100 red-light cameras have popped up at high-risk intersections on Long Island since they started being installed two years ago. The Three Village district has three of them.

The motivation behind them, according to the county, is to increase driver safety. According to the Suffolk County Police Department, there was a 20 percent drop in accidents at the intersection of Stony Brook Road and Route 347 from October 2010 to April 2011.

A report by Robert Holt, a journalism school student at Stony Brook University, says that Nassau and Suffolk counties have written more than 500,000 tickets and brought in more than $20 million for the government in two years. Protestors of red light cameras believe that their installation is simply a money grab.
