Setauket Presbyterian Church has welcomed as its head pastor Rev. Mary Speers, the first woman to ever hold that role at the local church, according to a report published Monday in The Village Times Herald.
In her first duty with the church, Speers oversaw the ash giving ceremony on Ash Wednesday. Her arrival at Setauket Presbyterian is the culmination of a 15-month review process in which the nine-person pastor nominating committee reviewed more than 100 résumés.
According to The Village Times Herald, Speers studied fine arts at University of Chicago and later graduated from Union Theological Seminary in 1989. She served 10 years at the Union Church of Bay Ridge.
"She's an artist and she has a really beautiful spirituality. It all really gelled," church elder Susan Murphy Schechter told the newspaper.
