Dangerous Utility Poles Removed from Library Grounds

Newsday letter helps get a local safety hazard removed.

director Ted Gutmann wrote to Newsday Community Watchdog columnist Judith Cartwright seeking a solution to a problem: two utility poles in front of the library looked splintered and dangerously ready to fall.

"This is of course a safety concern – we are next door to an elementary school and the sidewalk is used by students," Gutmann wrote in his letter.

Newsday called LIPA, then Cablevision, then Verizon – and ultimately, the problem was solved "thanks to the 'other guys' talking to one another," Cartwright wrote. Gutmann told Newsday on Friday the poles were removed.
