Cub Scout Pack To Hold Car Wash Fundraiser for Family Victimized by House Fire

Nassakeag group expects to have 30 helpers on hand at Setauket Fire House on Saturday.

The Cub Scout Promise asks that Scouts "help others at all times." The Nassakeag Cub Scout Pack 70 is doing just that this weekend, doing their part for a friend and his family.

The Pack will hold a car wash fundraiser this Saturday, June 18, at the Setauket Fire House on Route 25A. Hours of the event are 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., with all proceeds benefiting the Mecca family, whose house was heavily damaged by flames in the early hours of June 4.

Kimberly Henry, whose second-grade son thought of helping his classmate and his family, said that there will be 30 helpers on hand Saturday.

"The boys in the pack have come together and want to help out their friend and his family," Henry said. "That's at the heart of it. The pack is supporting them, parents are helping them along, but absolutely the boys are behind it."

The Meccas have three children – a second-grader, kindergartner and 7-month-old. The five of them are temporarily living in a hotel in Holtsville but are working to set up a trailer in the front yard of their property while the house is being rebuilt.

The Pack has already donated proceeds from its cake auction – approximately $500 – to the Meccas. It's now taking it a step further with the car wash.
