With Thanksgiving behind us and the turkey leftovers almost gone, it's time to think about decorating our homes in Three Village for the holidays. For many families that means the search is on for the perfect Christmas tree. Whether you want to cut your own, buy a pre-cut fresh tree, or find a pre-lit lifelike Christmas tree, here is a local guide for where to go.
Cut Your Own
Taking the family to the forest or a Christmas tree farm to cut your own tree is a sure way of guaranteeing the freshness of your real Christmas tree. At Carter's Christmas Tree Farm at 123 N. Country Road in Miller Place (631-331-4699), you choose and you cut your own tree. Pre-tagging is allowed and saws are provided. It's open from Nov. 20 through Dec. 19 on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Christmas tree varieties include Douglas Fir, Norway Spruce, and Scotch Pine.
Select a Pre-Cut Tree
There are also many places to purchase fresh pre-cut Christmas Trees. Going to your local farm stand or nursery is a great way to find trees of many different varieties and many of the lots are set up with Christmas music playing in the background to add to the experience. These locations also offer fresh wreaths, poinsettias and garland. In Setauket you can visit Detmer Farms (corner of Ridgeway & Route 25A, East Setauket) and Ann Marie's Farm Stand (72 N. Country Road, Setauket) to find the perfect tree. In St. James, you can visit Borella's Farm Stand (485 Edgewood Avenue), BB&GG Farm Stand (625 Route 25A) or Hitherbrook Nursery (559 Route 25A) to purchase your pre-cut Christmas tree.
Stony Brook Greenery at 198 Moriches Rd. in St. James located behind Staples and Sports Authority has pre-cut trees and wreaths. Hours are Mon.-Thurs 12-8 p.m. Fri 12- 9.p.m. Sat. and Sun. 10 a.m.-9 p.m.
If you are looking for a fresh pre-cut tree but you want to save some money, head to Home Depot, located at 255 Pond Path in South Setauket, and Lowe's Home Improvement, at 2150 Nesconset Highway in Stony Brook, both offer pre-cut trees in their garden centers. You can save money at these stores but you might not have the same festive experience that you will at a local tree stand.
Looks Like the Real Thing
Our search for the perfect tree will end with those that want to purchase a lifelike Christmas tree. Try the Fortunoff Store in Lake Grove on Nesconset Highway or Target on Pond Path in South Setauket.
