The Writing Place Closes Shop

Owner to retire after 19-years in business.

A local store is closing the books after 19-years of business in Stony Brook Village.

The Writing Place, a stationery store specializing in personal announcements, will shut its doors for good by the end of the month, said owner Phyllis Martinez, who is retiring.

“It’s been great. Our customers were just the best,” said Martinez. “They became like family.”

The store’s departure is one of several that have happened in the village shopping center in the past months. Most recently, Chocolate Works took the place left vacant by Welcome Home and Latitude 121 will fill the spot left by the Brook House.

Everything in the store is fifty-percent off said Martinez, including the store fixtures.

“There are a lot of paper products left and some wedding things and jewelry,” she said.

Things have changed over the 19 years that Martinez has had her business, she said, noting less use of the personal written letter.

“Thank you notes are not written any more. Email and the internet have changed things,” she said. “Brides shop for their invitations online.”

Martinez said she is looking forward to retirement and hopes to travel and volunteer more.

“I am going to clean my house, travel with my husband and enjoy life at a slower pace.”
