Stony Brook Train Station to get New Pedestrian Crossing

Commuters on midday trains on Port Jefferson line advised to leave extra travel time.

Crews at the Long Island Rail Road's Stony Brook train station are replacing the station's pedestrian crossing this week, with track work expected to be complete by August 6 and additional asphalt work to be completed by August 16.

Between Monday and Friday this week midday trains between Port Jefferson and Smithtown are replaced by buses, meaning westbound trains leaving Stony Brook at 12:12 p.m., 1:32 p.m., 3:11 p.m., and 4:41 p.m. are affected. Eastbound trains leaving Stony Brook at 9:43 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 12:27 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. are also affected.

The LIRR said in a special service advisory message that the buses replacing those trains may leave up to 32 minutes earlier than the regular train time so as to make their connections at Smithtown.

An LIRR spokesman said the pedestrian crossing at Stony Brook was last redone in the late 1980s.

This renovation includes installing a new track bed, ballasts, ties, rails, and rubberized panels "so that people walking in that area have a smooth surface to walk on," the spokesman said.

The work is an extension of the grade crossing overhaul being completed at the St. James train station.

The LIRR recently completed renovations of the Stony Brook station building, with refurbished restrooms and new interior walls, and is still in the process of replacing platform shelters, lighting, and railings.

According to an LIRR release, the daily ridership to and from the Stony Brook station is about 1,450.
