Stony Brook's Legends Hair Designs Expanding

The Spa at Legends is close to opening its doors.

Few storefronts in the Stony Brook Village Center ever stay vacant for very long, and now, its newest addition is also a familiar one.

is expanding its business to open The Spa at Legends in the space formerly occupied by Blue Dove Spa and, more recently, Age of New Beginnings Spa.

Legends co-owners Patrick Parent and Melissa Leibowitz said they conceived the idea in May. Although they toyed with the idea of moving into the space and bringing both the hair salon and the spa together under one roof, they ultimately decided to lease the 800-square-foot space that had already housed a spa.

The decision might even boost visibility for the hair studio, which Parent acknowledged is a little hidden from sight on the second floor location. "My idea for a while was, 'We've got to get on the ground, be more visible,'" he said.

Parent said the spa will "complete the whole experience" for current Legends clients. In fact, that client base of "very loyal, very regular" customers is exactly the reason they said they aren't worried about competition. "A lot of our customers come in and ask if we do facials. It kind of goes hand in hand with what we do here," he said.

On the menu of spa services will be facial work, skin care, waxing, body wraps, and massage therapy, with what Leibowitz described as an organic, simplified approach. She said they have been doing research when it comes to pricing their services. "They will be comparable, and we definitely back it up with the experience, the service and the professionalism," she said.

Among the challenges of opening a new business, Leibowitz said finding the right technicians, products, and equipment has taken time, not to mention redecorating to produce a new look and vibe.

"It's exciting but it's also stressful and nerve wracking," she said. "If your name is on it, it reflects who you are."

Legends Hair Designs has been around for about 25 years, with Parent taking over ownership four years ago and Leibowitz coming on board in May. The expansion has some nearby businesses buzzing.

"We’re very excited because Legends is well-established here," said Loretta Vertucci, owner of neighboring . "They’ll do a wonderful job. It will just add a nice touch to the area."
