Service Station, Rental Car Facility Go Dark [Empty in Three Village]

Getty gasoline sign blank; Avis sign details other nearby locations.

The phone number to University Service Station has been disconnected. Its lights are dark and the signs advertising its Getty gas prices are blank, all telltale signs that a business has closed its doors, at 999 North Country Rd. in Stony Brook.

Avis, the rental car facility that shared the property with the gas station and car repair business, also appears to be closed, with a sign on the front door advertising its two nearest locations in Port Jefferson Station and Medford. No one was available at those two locations to provide any additional details on this branch's closure.

Did you use either of these businesses? Are you sad to see them go dark? What kind of business would you like to see replace the rental car business and auto service station? Log in to Patch and share your answer as a comment below.

They overcharged for gas anyway

This is a shame. A locally owned, small community service station. I used to take my cars there for service. I'm sorry to see them go.

I am the mechanic there and we are re-opening. I just re-opened the repair shop last week and the new gas guy will be here in a few weeks. If anyone would like to stop by and visit, please feel free to do so.

It was sad to read about the gas station closing. I've been a customer since the gas crisis back in the 70's. One day when the lines were very long, they let me use the phone to call in to work to say I'd be late. There no cell phones at that time. Glad to hear it'll be re-opening.

my family has been going to this station since 1974. every one that worked there so kind in every way. the owner came to my aid with rental cars, repair of any form even house calls. still when i drove by they would call out my name with a friendly hi mikey when i was just going by in a hurry. THERE GAS PRICES WERE NOT HIGH

Justme.. Even if everyone voted no the raises were locked. By voting no programs would have beenRead More decimated more and more teachers given pink slips. The problem here is the BOE giving the union these contracts. It's time to STOP THE MADNESS!!
JJ Smith June 18, 2013 at 07:04 pm
And the candidate for the BOE ran unopposed. We have no to blame but ourselves.

Yes TC change is difficult but it has to start somewhere. What motivation does the BOE have toRead More change when we keep passing the budgets? Budgets have to fail, programs have to be cut before there will be any union negotiations. Many have to lose their jobs before they will allow their pay to be cut. Sounds harsh but it's reality. Our children will survive cuts, be educated and successful - even with less programs.
