Year in Review: 11 New Businesses that Opened in 2011

Both Stony Brook and East Setauket saw an influx of new businesses opening up in 2011, with everything from olive oils to toy trains to a hibachi grill bringing in new local customers.  Here are some of the stores that first opened their doors in Three Village in 2011:

• , a specialty food store, opened its doors in the Stony Brook Village Center in late October. Foodies can come down and sample a few of more than 40 different olive oils, olives, vinegars, and other products on the spot.

• opened its second location on Main Street in Stony Brook this past August. Owners Vincent and Angela D’Aguanno offer not only a huge variety of yarn, but also spinning wheels, looms, needles, bags, and other accessories, as well as knitting, crocheting, and spinning classes.

• After finding success online, opened its first physical storefront on Main Street in East Setauket. This hobby shop specializes in train sets, and carries model locomotives, buildings, structures, and all the tools needed to fix or revamp toy trains and railroads.

• brought a martial arts focus of kempo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu to East Setauket this winter with its new studio, owned by Nick Panebianco, which welcomes children interested in martial arts.

• opened in May in the Stony Brook Village Center, and carries a variety of red, white, and sparkling wines.  Lake Side Emotions also hosts wine tastings, and has connoisseurs on site to recommend wines and wine pairings.

• came to Stony Brook in October is a unique toy store for children that also offers puppet shows, story time, and arts and crafts classes for elementary-aged children.

• opened late last winter in East Setauket, and offers a variety of lunch, dinner, and snack options including smoothies, sandwiches, paninis, salads, burgers, and wings.

•  brought hibachi to Stony Brook early this year, and made a big splash. Between Kumo’s charming chefs, delectable food, and expansive array of drinks, this Japanese restaurant has plenty to offer Three Village.

• opened its fourth location on Long Island earlier this year in Stony Brook, offering waxing services and products to both women and men.

• Former Brookhaven National Lab electrical engineer Steve Cusack opened opened in East Setauket in November.

• opened earlier this year in Stony Brook to cater to fans of fresh California Mexican food.
