Fair Trade Winds Supports World Malaria Day. World Malaria Day is April 25, and to support the cause, in the Stony Brook Village Center will donate 20 percent of its sales that day to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's efforts to eradicate malaria deaths. The money will help the cause by purchasing mosquito nets, set up health clinics, educate the people most at risk, and research new ways to control mosquitos. “By buying fair trade, consumers can help to combat real third-world problems, like malaria. We hope events like these will encourage more people to be interested in fair trade products," said Paul Culler, co-owner of the store.

Renaissance Technologies Uses $3.5 Billion to Start New Hedge Fund. According to a report published Thursday by Bloomberg.com, Ren Tech launched its first new hedge fund in five years: a $3.5 billion fund, consisting mostly of employees' assets, hit the market on March 1 and climbed 3 percent between March 1 and April 13. Bloomberg cited two unnamed sources in reporting that Peter Brown and Robert Mercer, co-CEOs, decided to start the fund in 2010 after they took over for Ren Tech founder .
