Winthrop Sued for $62M by Double Amputee Patient

A Brooklyn woman was recently awarded $62 million following a lawsuit against Winthrop-University Hospital in Brooklyn Supreme Court over an alleged wrongful gynecological procedure that cost her both her legs and most of her hearing. Stacey Galette, 34, was a patient at the Mineola hospital for laparoscopic removal of an ectopic pregnancy, or a pregnancy outside of the womb, in October 2009, when, according to the suit, doctors punctured her intestine during the routine procedure and that caused an infection followed blood poisoning and gangrene in her legs, causing severe pain and for them to be amputated three days after she was discharged.

Long Island Economist Pearl Kamer Dead at 74

Pearl Kamer, most recently the chief economist for the Long Island Association , died Saturday of breast cancer. She was 74 years old. Kamer resigned from the LIA eight months ago, after working for 18 years with the powerful Long Island business group.

Ronkonkoma Parking Design Concept Unveiled

Long Island Index is unveiling designs for revolutionary parking structures in Ronkonkoma, and several other towns as part of their ParkingPLUS Design Challenge. The unveiling, held at Adelphi University Thursday morning, was part of a national contest for architects and designers to create parking structures that would work to revitalize downtown areas of Long Island communities.

New Proposal Revives Possibility of Sports Fields on Santilli Property

A Farmingdale company is drawing up plans for a sports complex along Old Northport Road, reviving hopes for the future of sports in the Kings Park industrial area. Kenny Henderson, owner of Prospect Sports, presented early plans to build a sports complex on 46.2 acres it has leased from Kings Park landowner Anthony Santilli between Indian Head Road and Old Northport Road. 

Garden City Eateries Get Good Grades

Nearly every eatery in Garden City is in line with critical New York State health codes, reported the State Health Department in 2013. Of all the health inspections performed in the village of Garden City in 2013, just four reported “critical violations,” according to documents reviewed by Patch this week.

Dog CPR Class Coming to East Northport

What happens if your dog chokes on a toy or gets a bad cut during a walk? A pet CPR and first aid class will be held Jan. 26 at Barkfield Road Dog Treats and Specialty Products in East Northport. The class will teach pet owners how to prevent and treat injuries pet injuries. Robyn Elman, President of In Home Pet Services, Inc., who is a certified ‘Pet Tech’ Instructor in the Tri-state area, is offering the class on pet life-saving from 3:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Casey's Sold: Plans for Popular Nightspot Uncertain

The popular Westhampton Beach nightspot, Casey's has been sold. A deal for the Montauk Highway location was signed on Jan. 2 with developer Paul Pawlowski purchasing the property for an undisclosed amount of money.
