Is Synthetic Pot Worse Than The Regular Stuff?

As local head shops are cited, municipalities across the country are lining up to ban "bath salts" and "spice."

On Tuesday, news broke that two head shops in Northern Suffolk are being sued by state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman over selling illegal synthetic marijuana products known as "herbal incense" or "spice." But even though these synthetic drugs have been , it's not so long ago that these substances were sold regularly.

States such as New York and Michigan have also banned synthetic marijuana, sold often as brands Spice or K2, following evidence that smoking them can cause psychotic episodes in people. In fact, synthetic marijuana has even been linked to gruesome cannibal attacks, where users began eating human victims or, most recently, a family dog.

The news also comes as several states such as Oregon and Michigan are eyeing legalization of traditional marijuana.

Since the synthetic drug fight is happening in our communities, with and headshops in the crosshairs, we're curious how locals feel about the entry of synthetic drugs into our communities, especially with how it affects local children.

Let us know in the comments.

And I say again - chose what you would like to believe, don't lead others to your misguided choice.

"I now have absolute proof that smoking even one marijuana cigarette is equal in brain damage to being on Bikini Island during an H-bomb test."-Richard Nixon lets not talk about misleading others
Walter Keenan July 12, 2012 at 03:42 AM
Rolling my eyes - 'Nuff said, thanks for summing that one up.
bingo dingo July 12, 2012 at 04:36 AM
lol unprofessional article by patch. you cite a blog that is far from credible and link back to it... why wouldn't you link to news sources where bath salts are linked to cannibal-like attacks? the "miami zombie" tested negative for bath salts. i understand what you are trying to do and all but at least be professional.

Worse than the real stuff implies the "real stuff" is bad- which it is not.
Jam Girl July 12, 2012 at 11:14 AM
Reminds me of "Reffer Nation" the hillarious propaganda movie from the 40s
Mels Ditties July 12, 2012 at 11:47 AM
From what I read / seen (it's a video world!) about these "legal" intoxicants, they are seriously dangerous...Not many potheads ripping off their clothing and cannibalizing homeless people (although this might be a solution to some of the "undomiciled" issues we have....Don't get you panties all in a bunch, it's a joke..a sick joke perhaps, but a JOKE!)...Nope the potheads are passing the bong, munching out on some ring dings and zoning out to some Pink Floyd.... If alcohol is legal, pot should be legal too....Imagine the jobs that could be created and the $$$ that could be raised to bailout massive government budget problems... Start with getting farmers back to work... Re-tooling manufacturing plants... Staffing manufacturing plants from harvesting to packaging.... Marketing (can ya just see THOSE commercials?...eg. McDoobie...LOL!) Refer Shops just like Liquor Stores Taxes, as yes the taxes the government can collect on the sales Refer Bars.... The War on Drugs as it relates to pot will NEVER be won...Billions of dollars being wasted, when billions of dollars could be made.... Legalize....
David Klopman July 12, 2012 at 12:41 PM
Walter, Please dont spread your propaganda and misguided disdain here. LOL John. We all know anything Nixon said has no credibility.
John Gruber July 12, 2012 at 01:01 PM
well he says don't go misleading others, looks like he only wears the shoe when he wants to. The only reason it ISN'T legal is because of politics and absolutely nothing with health. If the government cared about your health cigarettes and alcohol would be illegal to.
John Gruber July 12, 2012 at 01:02 PM
well believe it or not, anti marijuana activists do a LOT LESS misleading than those trying to keep it illegal.
John Gruber July 12, 2012 at 01:10 PM
what's the difference between a guy downing a six pack and a guy smoking a joint on a friday night? One's labeled a "drug user" while the other is considered normal when in reality, THEY'RE BOTH USING DRUGS. the only difference is that uncle same makes money off one of them (alcohol). not to mention both cigarettes and alochol are PROVEN to be dozens of times more addictive than pot. But uncle sam likes taking money from people with nicotine and tobacco problems
Henry Powderly (Editor) July 12, 2012 at 01:22 PM
Bingo, thanks for the feedback. We chose the Village Voice link because it was very recent, and the dog link goes to a CNN wire service article. We'd argue both are reputable, but we appreciate you keeping us on our toes.
Mels Ditties July 12, 2012 at 06:36 PM
But uncle sam likes taking money from people with nicotine and tobacco problems Since Uncle Sam is so broke now a days, why discriminate against the pot smoker?..Equal rights!...Legalize and tax em!!
mikeandersonkp July 12, 2012 at 07:11 PM
Walter, come down your too high on that horse !!! What's the deal with your smug superior one line comments ?. Calm down go smoke or something
Mels Ditties July 12, 2012 at 07:18 PM
Someone pass the bong to Walter....
John K. Massaro July 12, 2012 at 07:20 PM
eh, Walter is entitled to his own opinions. But I'm still trying to figure out whether or not he's debating me or agreeing with me...
Walter Keenan July 13, 2012 at 03:31 AM
The worst part is Nixon didn't say it, but eh - that's another topic. I am spreading no propaganda or misguided disdain. I simply said: And I say again - chose what you would like to believe, don't lead others to your misguided choice. That also goes for anyone who would like to tout that drugs, cigarettes, and a host of other intoxicants are "not bad" for you. It's simple really
Walter Keenan July 13, 2012 at 03:33 AM
High horse - huh?
Walter Keenan July 13, 2012 at 03:34 AM
The difference is a six pack was not made illegal to push Mexican's out of the country. Which in and of itself is another topic.
Walter Keenan July 13, 2012 at 03:38 AM
John - you could say in a sense I am agreeing with you. Pot could be made legal tomorrow, I wouldn't care it won't make or break my day. However to think it is not bad for you because it is natural is insane. Breathing smoke, any smoke natural or not is bad for you - I don't need Einstein to figure that one out.
John K. Massaro July 13, 2012 at 03:49 AM
Hence the quote in my last post, "Not saying that Pot is good for you, not by any means..."
John Gruber July 13, 2012 at 04:27 PM
pot was made illegal for nothing more than political reasons (hemp). If you're going to make some drugs legal and some not, it doesn't make sense to ban a less harmful one compared to tobacco and alcohol. you either got to legalize all 3 or ban all 3. It doesn't make sense to legalize the scientifically proven more harmful drugs. I couldn't care less if it was legalized, the current situation just doesn't make sense
Argile July 13, 2012 at 04:33 PM
Most drugs are tried due to peer pressure. This shows how weak people's willpower is.
John Gruber July 13, 2012 at 04:55 PM
i apologize, you're right it was Ronald Reagan, which still doesn't excuse how misleading that is. "At least with liquor I don’t lose motivation" Nixon basically thought it's ok to be an alcoholic because he can still be productive while drunk. Much better, right?
Walter Keenan July 15, 2012 at 03:35 AM
It's not about which is better, everyone chooses their own poison. I do however feel a fine line should be drawn as to which is better or worse. To say one is better than the other is misguided and misleading, each is bad for you in it's own right. I will not stand here and debate that one should be legal or illegal because after all there is truth booze and cigs harm you as well as pot. Yet the latter is illegal - it's hypocritical. Certainly if you want to smoke till you pass out, by all means party on if it's your thing. However don't wave a banner shouting it's natural a 6th grader knows that breathing smoke of any type natural or not is in fact bad for you. Your trouble is you have me pegged as some anti pot person, to view me from that angle - your wrong.
Walter Keenan July 15, 2012 at 03:41 AM
I agree. But your wrong, to say pot is less harmful there really is no proof to back up your claim.
Walter Keenan July 15, 2012 at 02:19 PM
Tried it, made me very paranoid almost on the verge of scary... But that sort of thing never happens with something so "natural".
John Gruber July 15, 2012 at 02:39 PM
actually there a TONS of studies that PROVE that of tobacco, alcohol and pot, pot has proven to be the more safer choice in terms of what it does to the rest of your body. you don't see alcohol or cigarettes being used to help people with cancer do you? That alone should tell you it's more useful than the other 2
John Gruber July 15, 2012 at 02:44 PM
I never said at any point that it's "healthy" and it's not really my business if you're anti-pot. But it is PROVEN, as in FACT that it does have therapeutic properties so in fact, it is more "useful" than the other 2
Steve Haupton July 24, 2012 at 03:51 AM
Most *everything* is tried due to some form of peer pressure. Would you be making idiotic comments like this on the internet if someone else hadn't done it first?
