On Tuesday, news broke that two head shops in Northern Suffolk are being sued by state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman over selling illegal synthetic marijuana products known as "herbal incense" or "spice." But even though these synthetic drugs have been , it's not so long ago that these substances were sold regularly.
States such as New York and Michigan have also banned synthetic marijuana, sold often as brands Spice or K2, following evidence that smoking them can cause psychotic episodes in people. In fact, synthetic marijuana has even been linked to gruesome cannibal attacks, where users began eating human victims or, most recently, a family dog.
The news also comes as several states such as Oregon and Michigan are eyeing legalization of traditional marijuana.
Since the synthetic drug fight is happening in our communities, with and headshops in the crosshairs, we're curious how locals feel about the entry of synthetic drugs into our communities, especially with how it affects local children.
