Staller Center Adds Broadway to HD Series

The Stony Brook University venue will show "The Importance of Being Earnest" on its big screen.

Stony Brook University's will show a high-definition screening of the Broadway production of the "Importance of Being Earnest" on June 2, proving you don't have to be a cable company to add HD channels in the area.

The event would be the first time Staller is showing a Broadway production projected on its big screen. Until now, Staller's HD programming has been limited to its Met Live in HD programming, which shows an HD broadcast of a live opera done by New York's famed Metropolitan Opera company. And it may well pave the way for future Staller shows.

"We want to see how Earnest goes, but we are already in discussions with the HD producers about other theatrical offerings beginning next fall," said Alan Inkles, director of the Staller Center.

The "Earnest" event, however, isn't a live one. The Staller Center said the June 2 show comes from a filmed staging of the production of writer Oscar Wilde's wit-driven play. The Roundabout Theatre Company is performing the show at Broadway's American Airlines Theatre, where it runs until July 3.

Tony Award winner Brian Bedford directs, though he also stars as Lady Bracknell in the comedic play which satires high-society Victorian culture.
