Setauket Music Teacher Hits High Note With Award Nomination

Richard Wiederman named a finalist in the Grammy Foundation's first ever Music Educator Award.

Recognized for his accomplishments as a music instructor, Setauket Elementary band teacher Richard Wiederman has been named a quarter-finalist for the first ever Grammy Music Educator Award.

Wiederman, who has been involved in music education for almost 30 years, discussed the importance and value of music in student's lives.

"There is no need for scientific tests or long-term studies to understand that music is beneficial to everyone, regardless of their age," Wiederman said. "Learning how to read music and learning a musical instrument helps develop cognitive skills as well as tactile skills that are beneficial in so many ways."

He joined the Three Village School District in 2000 and has taught band at the Nassakeag and Minnesauke Elementary Schools. At Setauket Elementary, he teaches woodwinds, brass and percussion along with conducting the beginner and advanced band. He pointed to the beginner band's spring concert as his favorite part of being an elementary school music teacher.

"The student has to memorize their individual solos and that really brings out the best in each student musician," he said. "It's the most magical night of the school year and you can sense the pride in each band member’s face -- and equally as important, you can see the pride in their parents' faces."

In addition to teaching, Wiederman is a professional trumpeter who has performed across the tri-state area. He received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education in 1985 from The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and his Master of Music in Performance from Boston University, School of Music in 1987.

The instructor is able to relate his teachings in the world of music to life as well.

"The idea that the whole band is only as strong as each individual player is vital for the success of the ensemble," he said, "and this is a great metaphor for life."

Wiederman is one of 21 quarter-finalists in New York State. The winner received a custom award and monetary grant ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.
