Reader Captures Stony Brook Scenery on a Smartphone

Sometimes when you don't have your regular camera, a cell phone will do.

What do you do when you come upon a scene that you find breathtaking. And it’s almost zero degrees out with the wind chill on the water? And you don't have your camera handy.

If you’re East Setauket-resident Pam Botway, you take out your smartphone to capture a beautiful picture and send it to Patch.

Botway was at an appointment across from Stony Brook Harbor last week when she took this photo.

“It was freezing out!” she said.

Usually Botway will shoot photos with her Canon camera but all she had on her that day was her Android cell phone. The result was still very impressive.

Apps like Instagram, Hipstamatic and others have made what was once the realm of poorly-framed out-of-focus camera phone pictures into an art form. With advances in technology, a quickly shot smart phone image can rival those of a pro. In fact, some have gone viral and become iconic news images when sent on Social Media like Twitter.

Botway told us where she was when she took this photo of Stony Brook Harbor.

“I absolutely love this area by the boatyard and the boardwalk,” she said in an email. “I decided to brave the near-zero wind chill and savor the breath-taking view.  Hardly anyone was out that day due to the bitter cold, and I wanted to share that moment.”
